I have a confession to make, I was born with a malfunctioning filter. Sadly, its quite inoperable. As a child, I was constantly getting in trouble for something I said or another. Not because what I said wasn’t true, but because I was the dumb sap who happily popped off the same thing that everyone else was undoubtedly thinking but were far too smart to say aloud.
As I have grown older and wiser, I have learned that the difference between getting grounded for ‘being too obnoxious’ and having people enjoy your work is a keyboard, a few more years, and a tougher skin. My filter has never been fixed, I still get tripped up on things I say all the time. But now that I have reached the age where it is impossible to ground me, I can write whatever I like and they call it satirical, humorous and entertaining. Weird, huh?
And that little lack of a filter has come in pretty handy. Now that the shackles of youth and a past marriage are officially off, I’ve experienced quite a bit of success in a variety of unexpected places. By day, I’m a humble public servant. By night, I’m a writer, researcher, freelance journalist, charity fairy and all around word artist. Try keeping a filter with that kind of itinerary!
Jenuinely Jennifer is a collection of my thoughts and experiences as I continue my life uninhibited, unencumbered and unfiltered. Take a look around. I’m sure I’ll be saying something you were thinking about soon enough!
